Sunset Ruins Acrylic Painting Process

Sunset Ruins Acrylic on Canvas

After painting Homecoming, the warmth of summer was creeping in, and  I couldn’t help but think of tropical landscapes. So the question I asked myself is, what kind of magical tropical place do I want to explore? What beautiful, mysterious place do I want to visit? What if, while out on a hike, you discover some ancient ruins?

Pushing My Acrylic Painting Skills

I realized that the last two acrylic paintings I had done were full of rocks and sand. So, I wanted to add some trees for this painting to challenge myself and grow my skills. I really enjoyed painting scenes with water, and this time, it was going to be another river. Most of my scenes are set at night, so this one was a little bit of a challenge. I pretty much stuck with my palate of pinks, purples, and greens, but It couldn’t be as dark.

Challenges

Painting palm trees was new to me as well. I went out and bought an angled brush that made the task very enjoyable. The most challenging part of this painting was blending the sky. I actually painted it again after I had the trees in and then had to paint the trees again. I couldn’t get the acrylics to blend quite the way I wanted them to. Looking back now, it may have been easier if, instead of trying to do thin washes of paint to try and blend the colors, maybe using an acrylic medium that would keep the paint wet longer would have been better. In the end, I got it to look how I wanted it just took a few tries.

Final Thoughts

I really love how much depth the forest in the background has. It makes me want to go in there and explore to see what else I can find.

This painting challenged me and helped push my skills further. I wonder what’s inside those ruins. Is it the treasure we’ve been looking for? What’s in the forest and beyond? We better check it out before the sun sets!
